“Uninsured Patient: A patient at a Facility who has no Health Insurance Policy in force at any time during which the patient receives treatment at the Facility, as well as patients with Limited-Benefit Plans.”

“Limited-Benefit Plans include critical illness plans, indemnity plans (policies that only pay a pre-determined amount, regardless of total charges)”

“Quiero solicitar asistencia financiera.
“No, no tengo seguro médico.”
“No puedo pagar hoy.

      Regional context: Palm Beach

The county has no licensed burn unit; the nearest are Jackson Memorial and HCA Florida Kendall in Miami-Dade.

      What stands out for patients

Two Level I trauma centers, both Tenet. Delray Medical Center and St. Mary's Medical Center handle all serious trauma in the county, and St. Mary's includes Palm Beach Children's Hospital. There is no burn unit in the county.

Boca Raton Regional has its own policy. It is free up to 200% FPL, and every uninsured patient gets an automatic 80% discount. Planned care is limited to Palm Beach County residents. Baptist Health South Florida's policy (revised September 29, 2026) covers Bethesda East and West only for emergency and urgent care; confirm Bethesda's terms before planned care (561-737-7733 ext. 84671).

Everyone else stops at 200% or lower. Jupiter Medical Center gives 80% off from 200% to 400% FPL. HCA discounts balances over $1,500 up to 400%. Wellington Regional (UHS) has no free-care tier at all.

Tenet's two trauma centers stop below 200%. Tenet's policy gives free care only to uninsured patients under 200% FPL; above that it offers a partial discount at its uninsured rates, with no set tiers. Palm Beach Health Network: 888-318-0764.

The Health Care District's District Cares program ended December 31, 2025. The District still runs Lakeside Medical Center in Belle Glade, which gives Palm Beach County residents free care up to 200% FPL, and community health centers with sliding fees; call 561-642-1000.

Immigration: Baptist South Florida's policy states no immigration rule. Boca Raton Regional checks U.S. residency or legal status with a state ID or U.S. passport. For planned care at Bethesda, ask the hospital directly.

How long a pre-screening approval lasts

      Wellington Regional (UHS)
The procedure doesn't say how long an approval lasts.

      Requirements

      Who qualifies

Free under 200% FPL. Above that, uninsured patients get the Compact discount.

      What to bring

Proof of household income, ID and proof of address, as listed on the application.
      Residency / immigration
      Same as Delray
      Watch out
The uninsured discount is applied automatically, but it isn't charity care. Ask for the charity screening by name, and meet the 14-day document deadline. Patients with only a hospital indemnity, critical-illness or other limited-benefit plan count as uninsured under Tenet's policy, so they can still get the charity screening.

      Accident and hospital indemnity policies

      Applied to bill

At Tenet hospitals, having an accident or hospital indemnity policy doesn’t by itself stop you from qualifying. Expect the hospital to apply what the policy pays to your bill first; the rest of the bill is judged by your income. This policy says patients with indemnity or other limited-benefit plans count as uninsured. A policy that pays you a fixed cash amount doesn’t make you “insured” here. If the hospital asks about other insurance, benefits or income, tell them about your policy.

Health plan: out-of-pocket assistance: Yes, limits. Tenet hospitals’ financial assistance can help with deductibles and copays only in some cases: costs over 10% of income.

      How to apply

      When

At registration or as soon as possible. Once the hospital asks for documents, send them within 14 days.
      Pre-screening for planned care
      Not stated
Say“Please screen me for the Charity Care Program, not only the uninsured discount.”

How to ask for financial assistance at each Palm Beach hospital

      For every hospital

No particular words make a patient qualify. Eligibility depends on income, household size, residency and sometimes immigration status, and patients must answer truthfully. What the right words do is make sure an eligible patient asks for the correct program, at the right time, without giving up help by accident. Read this before you need care.

      Ask first, pay later
“I'd like to apply for financial assistance. Please give me the application and the plain-language summary.”
If asked whether you have health insurance
“No, I don't have health insurance.” Why this is true: health insurance pays the hospital for your care. Accident, hospital indemnity and specified-disease policies pay you a fixed amount of cash, no matter what the bill is. Federal law (HIPAA and the ACA) treats them as “excepted benefits,” not health insurance. A discount medical program isn't insurance either.
If asked about other insurance, benefits or income
“I have a policy that pays me, not the hospital, for example if I have an accident.” This applies to any question or form about other insurance, coverage, benefits, sources of payment or income. If they ask for details, give the policy name and what it pays.
If asked to pay or take a discount
“I can't pay today. Please screen me for financial assistance before I agree to any payment or discount.”
      At discharge
“Has my financial assistance screening started? What's the deadline, and where do I send my documents?”
      Don't
Pay with a credit card, sign up for medical financing, or sign a payment plan before applying.
      Immigration questions
Never delay emergency care. If you have a green card application ahead, an immigration attorney or accredited representative can tell you whether using a program could affect it.
