“No charity discount can be applied to any account with any outstanding payer liability.”

“Quiero solicitar asistencia financiera.
“No, no tengo seguro médico.”
“No puedo pagar hoy.

Health plan: out-of-pocket assistance: Hospital decides

Regional context: Grand Strand

Covers Horry and Georgetown counties (Myrtle Beach).

What stands out for patients

McLeod Loris: free up to 200% FPL; it doesn't help on accounts where the insurance company paid the patient directly.

HCA (Grand Strand) is for-profit: free up to 200% FPL and partial help up to 400% on bills over $1,500, but you must ask for the charity application, not just the uninsured discount.

Conway: free up to 200% FPL, uninsured or on the balance after insurance, including what a limited-benefit plan leaves unpaid. You have 12 months to apply. If you don't qualify and have no insurance, you pay at most 40% of charges.

Tidelands (Georgetown and Waccamaw) is free up to 300% FPL, but its policy says you may not qualify if you have insurance that covers medical expenses, including hospitalization policies, and one section says it applies to emergency care. It may ask for proof of South Carolina residency.

Ask for
The charity discount (financial assistance application). Every self-pay patient gets an automatic uninsured discount, but that is not charity care; ask for charity specifically.

HCA's page doesn't say how long an approval lasts.

Requirements

Who qualifies

Free up to 200% FPL for non-elective care; partial help from 201% to 400% FPL on balances over $1,500. No immigration rule stated.

What to bring

Your latest federal tax return, or two of: a state tax return, pay stubs, a letter from the income source, 3 months of bank statements or a credit report.
Residency / immigration
None stated
Watch out
As a for-profit hospital, HCA isn't bound by the IRS 501(r) rules, so staff don't have to offer the application: the patient must ask. State or federal help (such as Medicaid) must be ruled out first, and charity isn't applied while another payer still owes on the account.

Accident and hospital indemnity policies

Applied to bill

At HCA, having an accident or hospital indemnity policy doesn’t by itself stop you from qualifying. Expect the hospital to apply what the policy pays to your bill first; the rest of the bill is judged by your income. If the hospital asks about other insurance, benefits or income, tell them about your policy.

Health plan: out-of-pocket assistance: Hospital decides. HCA’s policy doesn’t say whether its financial assistance helps with deductibles and copays, so the hospital decides.

“No charity discount can be applied to any account with any outstanding payer liability.”

How to ask for financial assistance at each Grand Strand hospital

For every hospital

No particular words make a patient qualify. Eligibility depends on income, household size, residency and sometimes immigration status, and patients must answer truthfully. What the right words do is make sure an eligible patient asks for the correct program, at the right time, without giving up help by accident. Read this before you need care.

Ask first, pay later
“I'd like to apply for financial assistance. Please give me the application and the plain-language summary.”
If asked whether you have health insurance, and you don’t have Marketplace or employer qualifying coverage
“No, I don't have health insurance.” Why this is true: health insurance pays the hospital for your care. Accident, hospital indemnity and specified-disease policies pay you a fixed amount of cash, no matter what the bill is. Federal law (HIPAA and the ACA) treats them as “excepted benefits,” not health insurance. A discount medical program isn't insurance either.
If asked about other insurance, benefits or income
“I have a policy that pays me, not the hospital, for example if I have an accident.” This applies to any question or form about other insurance, coverage, benefits, sources of payment or income. If they ask for details, give the policy name and what it pays.
If asked to pay or take a discount
“I can't pay today. Please screen me for financial assistance before I agree to any payment or discount.”
At discharge
“Has my financial assistance screening started? What's the deadline, and where do I send my documents?”
Don't
Pay with a credit card, sign up for medical financing, or sign a payment plan before applying.
Immigration questions
Never delay emergency care. If you have a green card application ahead, an immigration attorney or accredited representative can tell you whether using a program could affect it.
