“Options that would yield a third party payment on account(s) under CAFA review including, but not limited to Workers’ Compensation, governmental plans such as Medicare and Medicaid, State/Federal Agency plans, Victim’s Assistance, Cobra, etc., or third-party liability payments resulting from automobile or other compensable events.”

“AnMed follows two different processes based on patient responsibility and coverage when determining eligibility for financial assistance for uninsured and insured patients.”

“Quiero solicitar asistencia financiera.
“No, no tengo seguro médico.”
“No puedo pagar hoy.

Covers Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, Pickens, Oconee, Laurens, Cherokee, Union, Greenwood and Abbeville counties.

      What stands out for patients

Prisma is the most generous in the region: free up to 250% FPL and 77% off up to 400%, for uninsured patients and insured patients in its network. But its policy excludes health care sharing ministries that reimburse the patient, and a policy that pays you could be treated the same way.

Spartanburg Regional is a public hospital (a state health district). It only publishes a two-page summary: free up to 200% FPL, with partial help above that. Its application asks whether you're a U.S. citizen.

Bon Secours St. Francis helps insured or uninsured patients: free up to 200% FPL, 81% off up to 400%, and deductibles and copays go on the sliding scale. If you may qualify for Medicaid, you must apply first.

Self Regional (Greenwood) requires legal South Carolina residency and an application for a subsidized Marketplace plan. Free up to 200% FPL, with an asset limit of $6,000 ($8,000 for families).

AnMed (Anderson and Cannon): free up to 200% FPL, 85% off up to 300% and 75% up to 400%, for South Carolina or Georgia residents only. For outpatient or emergency care under $40,000, it screens uninsured patients automatically.

Abbeville uses Self Regional's program (legal South Carolina residency, up to 200% FPL) and asks for Social Security cards for the whole household.

Shriners Children's treats children regardless of ability to pay or insurance.

AnMed Coverage Assistance and Financial Assistance (CAFA).

      How long an approval lasts

      AnMed
Covers 180 days before and 180 days after the application.

      Requirements

      Who qualifies

South Carolina or Georgia residents: free up to 200% FPL, 85% off up to 300% and 75% up to 400%. If you don't qualify, AnMed's web page says self-pay patients get 50% off.

      What to bring

The CAFA application and whatever documents they ask for about your household income for the last 30 days (from your employer and bank).
      Residency / immigration
South Carolina or Georgia residents only; immigration status not mentioned
      Watch out
Before assistance, you must apply, with AnMed's help, for any other coverage you may get (Medicaid, Medicare and others). If you don't cooperate, you don't qualify. The automatic screening is only for patients without current health insurance.

      Accident and hospital indemnity policies

      Unknown

AnMed’s policy doesn’t say how it treats an accident or hospital indemnity policy, so the hospital decides. If the hospital asks about other insurance, benefits or income, tell them about your policy.

Health plan: out-of-pocket assistance: Hospital decides. AnMed’s policy doesn’t say whether its financial assistance helps with deductibles and copays, so the hospital decides.

This copy is a scanned document, so we can’t show the highlighted section.

Where it says it: AnMed financial assistance policy. The hospital makes the final decision.

      How to apply

      When

At the time of care or after. For outpatient or emergency care under $40,000, AnMed screens uninsured patients automatically at the final bill. Approval covers 180 days back and 180 days forward.
      Pre-screening for planned care
Not stated (approval covers 180 days back and forward)
Say“I'd like to apply for AnMed's financial assistance program (CAFA). Please give me the application.”

How to ask for financial assistance at each Upstate hospital

      For every hospital

No particular words make a patient qualify. Eligibility depends on income, household size, residency and sometimes immigration status, and patients must answer truthfully. What the right words do is make sure an eligible patient asks for the correct program, at the right time, without giving up help by accident. Read this before you need care.

      Ask first, pay later
“I'd like to apply for financial assistance. Please give me the application and the plain-language summary.”
If asked whether you have health insurance, and you don’t have Marketplace or employer qualifying coverage
“No, I don't have health insurance.” Why this is true: health insurance pays the hospital for your care. Accident, hospital indemnity and specified-disease policies pay you a fixed amount of cash, no matter what the bill is. Federal law (HIPAA and the ACA) treats them as “excepted benefits,” not health insurance. A discount medical program isn't insurance either.
If asked about other insurance, benefits or income
“I have a policy that pays me, not the hospital, for example if I have an accident.” This applies to any question or form about other insurance, coverage, benefits, sources of payment or income. If they ask for details, give the policy name and what it pays.
If asked to pay or take a discount
“I can't pay today. Please screen me for financial assistance before I agree to any payment or discount.”
      At discharge
“Has my financial assistance screening started? What's the deadline, and where do I send my documents?”
      Don't
Pay with a credit card, sign up for medical financing, or sign a payment plan before applying.
      Immigration questions
Never delay emergency care. If you have a green card application ahead, an immigration attorney or accredited representative can tell you whether using a program could affect it.
